Sparsly populated and mostly traffic-free, don't look for anywhere to get petrol on this road. Between Murau in the south and Stein there's no petrol. A few villages on the north ramp have hotels though.
It's a good ride, especially from the south where the road is a long series of slightly-climbing sweepers. The bottom part has been resurfaced [2003] to get rid of the worst bumps but there is still a 6km stretch which will test your suspension. Don't let that put you off though, the road is worth it.
It's also fairly prone to snow falls, even in July.
