The Bernina Pass or Passo del Bernina is a 2328m mountain pass in the Bernina Range of the Alps, in the canton of Graubünden (Grisons) in eastern Switzerland. It connects the famous resort town of St. Moritz in the Engadin valley with the Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo, which ends in the Italian town of Tirano in Valtellina.
Fast sweepers on a wide road with great surface. This can be busy because of traffic heading for duty-free Livigno.
Up out of Tirano, you cross the border in to Switzerland. You pass the lake and a few small towns - watch out for the railway running parallel to and often right in the middle of the road - some risky level crossings. It's quite fast and not too twisty. Out of the towns the road climbs gently on sweepers and a surface which stays superb all the way to St. Moritz. Up to the tree-line, then the road gets consistently tighter, but because it's a major road it's neither steep nor narrow. The section near the top is absolutely brilliant - fast tight bends which turn into huge, wide hairpins - just chuck the bike over and keep it there. Watch out if you're going really fast as some bends tighten a bit mid-corner.
The northern side is a lot straighter and very fast, with suburb views.
We rate this an easy route.
