Where do we start with the Gavia Pass? At 2621m It is the tenth highest paved road in the Alps. The pass lies in the Lombardy region and divides the province of Sondrio to the north and the province of Brescia to the south. Certainly not a well travelled route, so not much traffic. Scenery, well this is the high alps so it’s just stunning. So far so good, now the actual road; most of it is very narrow two lane and one in places, the surface, well, I guess it is what you would expect for a road like this- let’s just say a you not going to be getting your knee down on most of this route.

We road it form south to north, but can be ridden either way. Staring from Ponte di Legno the south ramp is a nice wander in the in the forest and up though alpine meadows. This quickly gives way to single track road, tight hairpins, and guard rails, well that would be extra up here. But the feeling and scenery make it all worth it. You really fell like you have transcended to a different time and place when you ride this route. At the top, depending on the year, you are going to find snow up here, even in early summer The north ramp is absolutely civilized in comparison to the south. There are a series of hairpins as you approach Santa Caterina, but nothing too savage. After Santa Caterina you have a nice canyon ride with some lovely sweeping corners all the way down to Bormio.

This is a difficult route. I would not even attempt it in poor weather.
