At 1815m the Maloja Pass (Italian: Passo del Maloja, German: Malojapass) is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps in the canton of Graubünden, linking the Engadin with the Val Bregaglia and Chiavenna in Italy. It marks the watershed between the Danube and Po basins. This is really a one ramp pass, with all your climbing done on the suoth side. The route can be divided into three parts:
1. The canyon- leaving Chiavenna at 333m, you gently wind up the canyon. Mostly wide sweeping corners and straits with stunning scenery.
2. The ramp- there is a very steep ramp up to the 1815m summit with multiple hairpins. The road is reasonable wide to accommodate the tour coaches who regularly make this run.
3. The lakeside cruise- after the summit you cruise gently by the side of the many long lakes south of St Moritz- just spectacular!
This is fairly major road so in high season you might find yourself crawling along, especially up and down the ramp. As it is a major road in to St Moritz, It is all in good condition, reasonably wide with good surface. We rate this route as easy to ride.
