The Furka Pass is a 2429 mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka-Oberalp-Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass and this is where all the heavy vehicles go.

If you are riding east from the Valais, when you arrive at Gletsh you are presented with a very difficult decision, continue strait up the Furka, or turn left up the Grimsal. We can’t really help you here as they are both stunning roads. In fact, if it were us, we would ride the whole circuit, Furka, Susten and then the Grimsal, repeat as necessary.

OK, back to the Furka, leaving Gletsh you run up the west ramp. After a couple of tight hairpins, you ride along the side of the mountain in what seems like a never ending ribbon of beautifully sequenced corners. About ½ way up you can go have a wander through the Rhone glacier, and then on to the top.

The East ramp is much narrower and the hairpins get casino quite tight. Makes for some good entertainment in the summer time as the big coaches try to make it around in one go.

One of the classic Swiss passes with absolutely stunning scenery. A bucket list route and one you should not miss if you enjoy riding.

Fun Fact: The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger for the Aston Martin chase scene.

We rate this a medium difficulty route as the east ramp can be very narrow and the hairpins very sharp.

Editor review

The road is very steep at the top. Halfway up you can stop and visit the ice tunnels inside the Rhône glacier. You can get up some pretty high speeds on sections here. Be warned: as on a lot of passes, no crash-barriers.
